SEBASTINIANS COMMUNITY PREPARES FOR UPCOMING PAASCU FORMAL VISITATION

           by Monique Conde

“We’re supposed to have that on the second semester of the school year 2015-2016,” confirmed Dr. Belinda H. Quinio, SSC-RdC’s Accreditation Officer, when asked about the date of the PAASCU Formal visit for the College Department. Although there is no exact date yet, the visit is already in the list of events that the school is already preparing for.

Since the Preliminary Visit to the College Department two years ago, passing the Consultancy Visit on areas such as Faculty, Administration, and School & Community turns out to be one of SSC-RdC’s accomplishments in preparation for the Formal Visit. “But we have to go back to the areas not covered during the Consultancy Visit, and those are Student Services, Library and Audio-Visual Center, Laboratories and Physical Plant, and Curriculum & Instruction,” Dr. Quinio clarified. The said areas will be up for review. “These are areas in which the school have not submitted a report with regards to action taken based on the recommendations given by the PAASCU Accreditors two years ago,” she also added.

The College of Accountancy, Business Administration, and of Arts, Sciences, and Nursing will be the departments involved for the said visit. However, Dr. Quinio also revealed that the school is considering applying for self-survey for the College of Criminal Justice Education once the line-up of their faculty is completely prepared. “It’s only to assess if the CCJE is ready to apply for its own Consultancy Visit,” said Dr. Quinio.

Asked if she thinks the school is ready for the upcoming Formal Visit, Dr. Quinio answered, “Perhaps, God-willing, because we are really making sure that the school passes the Formal Visit. We have been waiting for two years for the full implementation of the recommendations given by the PAASCU.” She also said that the institution will have enough time to process all the recommendations needed.

Accordingly, the main focus of the institution’s review on areas to be visited by the accreditors consists of Curriculum & Instruction, and Facilities. If things go as planned, the Accreditation Officer stated that the school’s next step after the Formal Visit will be to apply for Level 1 for the College Department to go along Basic Education Department’s Level 1 Accreditation for High School and the recent success of Grade School in passing the Preliminary Visit.

“We hope and pray that the College Department passes the Formal Visit.” Dr. Quinio concluded.

SSCRdC K-12 IMPLEMENTATION IN 2016

by Monique Conde and Jolina Tosco

San Sebastian College-Recoletos de Cavite is K-12 ready. The K-12 program formally known as the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 will be fully implemented this 2016. First batch of students under K-12 program will enter senior high school’s grade 11 in 2016, and grade 12 in 2017. In such case, many colleges and universities are in fear or possibly new enrollees in the next two academic years. Last, July 13, 2015, Commission on Higher Education (CHED) issued a memorandum clarifying that Higher Education Institutions can still accept freshmen and sophomore students in school year 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 in two kinds of graduates.

First are those graduates from early implementers of senior high school. 57 public schools and 334 private schools will have senior high school graduates by 2016. CHED urged Higher Education Institutions to consider an “Advanced Placement/Assessment System” that will credit similar subjects taken up in senior high school to avoid duplication in college, since CHED’s new general curriculum will just take on 2018.

Second are those graduates under the 10 year pre-college before K-12. CHED passed a resolution allowing all graduates from the old basic education program – the last of which was batch 2015, to enroll in school year 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 as a “last chance to go to college.”

With these implementation coming from CHED SSC-RdC now offers programs under Academic Track, Accountancy & Business Management (ABM): Accountancy, Management Accounting, Financial Management, Human Resource Development Management, Marketing Management, Hotel & Restaurant Management, and Tourism; Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS): AB Communication, Criminology; Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM): Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Psychology and Nursing; and General Academic Strand (GAS).

SSC-RdC also offers programs in Technical-Vocational Track such as Home Economics, Information Communication Technology and Industrial Arts.

As of now the government is eyeing the inclusion of P9.05 billion transition fund to the 2016 budget of both CHED and the Department of Labor and Employment.

ICT TEAM RELEASES OFFICIAL STUDENT PORTAL OF SSC-RDC

by Monique Conde

Information and Communication Technology Office (ICT) of San Sebastian College Recoletos de Cavite finally released the official Student Portal; a way on students can finally view their grades online. The release of the portal was a mock testing and the team is still doing a lot of tweaking to improve the site because students complain about the out dated way of releasing grades - wherein students fall in line for hours just to get a glimpse of their grades.

The development team was able to come up with web based software called IOnSys or the Integrated Online System that is especially designed for SSCRdC. The team optimized IOnSys for ease-of-use, flexibility and power to handle biggest school administration tasks. Teachers, administrators, and parents can connect in a seamless, real time environment that’s simple as using the internet.

Since IOnSys is a web based platform, it works entirely online through your web browser. This gives the flexibility for all the staff members to work from school, home or in any place where internet access is available. There will be no special hardware or software needed because IOnSys also runs on Mac OS and Windows.

The ICT team also released an app called SSCR Official Student Portal with basic iOS and Android functionality that can be downloaded from their site so that it would be easier for students and faculty members to access their accounts.

Faculty members can instantly calculate final grades, and remark students with a click of a button that is inspired by the look and feel of a traditional user interface called Sigma Design, Inc., (SIGM). Students, on the other hand, can access grades, accounts, schedules, teacher comments and up-coming assignments or even exams online.

“The release of the Student Portal is such a big help for me and my classmates because it saves much time and money. Instead of going back and forth to the registrar’s office for the purpose of checking our grades, we can just go online and log in to the portal,” said Kimverly Manalac, 3rd year Management Accountancy.

The ICT Development Team is currently working to improve the site even more to provide ease of access to the Sebastinian community and ensure that we are catching  up to the technological advancements in the academic phase.

BASTE TV ROLLS IN ACTION

by Monique Conde

Baste TV - project of the Sebastinian Communicators (SebCom) was officially launched last summer; months before the new academic year officially opened.

Baste TV’s first episode was released on April, but the project’s concept was dated earlier than that. “We started making plans for the project since February,” said Jeianna Franco, Baste TV’s Executive Producer.

Led by Mr. Carlo Basuil, SebCom Adviser; Baste TV’s purpose is not only to feature the things going-on inside the campus; it also to serves as the local training ground for the Communication Arts students of San Sebastian College Recoletos – de Cavite.

Asked how the episodes are decided, Franco said, “It depends on the trend for the specific time If there is anything news worthy of course we do our best to make a coverage of it.”

Sebcom’s priority according to Franco is for the project’s improvements. “We’re hoping to release more news, episodes and programs that would help Sebastian freshmen know more about our alma mater.”
